About
In 2012, Carolyn Johnson, a veteran special education teacher with 37 years of experience, embarked on a new journey. After a distinguished career marked by numerous accolades, including multiple “Teacher of the Year” awards in the Dallas Independent School District (DISD), Carolyn retired from the public school system. However, her commitment to the students whose lives she had touched so profoundly did not end there.
Driven by the heartfelt requests of families who wanted their loved ones to continue benefiting from her guidance and expertise, Carolyn opened Carolyn’s Unique Learning Activity Center in Mesquite, Texas. This day habilitation center was a direct response to the community’s need for a nurturing, structured environment where individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities could thrive and progress.
Carolyn’s extensive background, bolstered by dual master’s degrees in counseling and special education, had equipped her to create transformative educational programs. Her model classroom in DISD was a testament to her ability to foster growth, independence, and joy in her students. The center was a natural evolution of this mission, providing a haven where her former students and others like them could build on the daily living skills they had acquired under her care. In 2016, Carolyn embarked on an exciting new chapter, obtaining her Home and Community-Based Services (HCS) and Texas Home Living (TXHML) provider licenses.
This strategic move enabled Carolyn to bring her compassionate model of care to a vastly broader audience. No longer limited to a single geographic area, she could now provide vital services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout the state.
At Carolyn’s Unique Learning Activity Center, participants find more than just a program – they discover a supportive community dedicated to their ongoing development and well-being. Carolyn’s legacy extends far beyond her classroom walls, touching generations of families and inspiring a new standard of compassion and dedication in special education.
We look forward to hear from you soon.
